Karl Friedrich Schinkel (1781-1841) is perhaps the best-known German architect, having left an indelible mark on the artistic era of the first half of the 19th century, subsequently also known as the “Schinkel era.” However, he was not only an architect – he also painted and worked as a general designer, stage designer, art writer and royal building authority official. The most varied creative talents were united in this one individual; and he succeeded in putting them to good use thanks to his inherent self-discipline, organizational talent and determination. As a universally active artist, he came to be regarded as the definitive authority on art and taste – not only in the then Kingdom of Prussia, but way beyond. (…)
